While watching a recent episode of “Doctors”, I happened to catch them discussing their tips for easy weight loss through various exercises that could be easily done from home.
Always one for trying anything new, especially if it doesn’t require spending money, that I just don’t have?
So as they went through a list of simple steps and ideas, I became completely involved and positioning myself in front of the TV, prepared for anything they might throw my way. The list began as follows:
2.Play eight ball. (86 calories/hour)
3. Play the piano. (170 calories/hour)
4. Fold your clothes for 30 minutes. (72 calories)
5. Practice your figure-eight on the ice-skating rink. (325 calories/hour)
6. Shop the aisles at the grocery store for 30 minutes. (81 calories)
7. Go fly a kite for 30 minutes. (80 calories)
8. Make out! (238/hour)
No real surprises, until they suggested watching a horror movie. What?? That’s right, you heard me, it would seem that by watching something that scares the living crap out of you, can also have a hand in burning extra caloriesAccording to Dr.Ian Smith, the author of Shred:The Revolutionary Diet, you can burn as many calories watching your favorite horror movie as you would if you took a 30-minute walk because being frightened causes a burst of adrenaline, which causes your heart rate to increase, your blood pressure to rise and your metabolism to rev up.
Now being a huge fan of the horror genre, knew this was going to be a sinch to do, and that same afternoon went rummaging through my own personal collection to settle back for a good calorie-burn-session!
Starting with the Alfred Hitchcock classic, “Psycho” (for the “warm-up), and steadily progressing to the “cardio” level with a few more recent films.
I have to say, after watching “The Conjuring”(even through the gaps of my fingers), I was convinced that all the heart-stopping, muscle-jumping scenes had done the job and didn’t feel so guilty about the ice-cream & chocolate I’d splurged on the day before.
Don’t take my word for it, read on…..
“The Conjuring”….a real calorie burner!
From The Telegraph:
Viewers who put themselves through 90 minutes of adrenaline-pumping terror can use up as much as 113 calories, close to the amount burned during a half-hour walk and the equivalent to a chocolate bar.
The movie top of the list of calorie-burners was found to be the 1980 psychological thriller The Shining, with the average viewer using up a whopping 184 calories.
Jaws took the runner-up spot, with viewers burning on average 161 calories, and The Exorcist came third, with 158 calories.
The University of Westminster study measured the total energy expenditure of ten different people as they watched a selection of frightening movies.
Scientists recorded their heart rate, oxygen intake and carbon dioxide output – and discovered the number of calories used increased by on average a third during the films.
The research also revealed films featuring moments designed to make viewers jump in terror are the best calorie-burners, as they cause heart rates to soar.
Dr Richard Mackenzie, senior lecturer and specialist in cell metabolism and physiology at the University of Westminster, said: “Each of the ten films tested set pulses racing, sparking an increase in the heart rate of the case studies.
“As the pulse quickens and blood pumps around the body faster, the body experiences a surge in adrenaline.
“It is this release of fast acting adrenaline, produced during short bursts of intense stress (or in this case, brought on by fear), which is known to lower the appetite, increase the Basal Metabolic Rate and ultimately burn a higher level of calories.”
Helen Cowley, editor of the movie rental company LOVEFiLM – which commissioned the University of Westminster study – said: “We all know the feeling of wanting to hide behind the sofa or grab a pillow when watching scary or hair raising scenes, but this research suggests that maybe those seeking to burn some calories should keep their eyes on the screen.”
The top 10 calorie-burning frightening films were:
1. The Shining: 184 calories
2. Jaws: 161 calories
3. The Exorcist: 158 calories
4. Alien: 152 calories
5. Saw: 133 calories
6. A Nightmare on Elm Street: 118 calories
7. Paranormal Activity: 111 calories
8. The Blair Witch Project: 105 calories
9. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre: 107 calories
